IonQ Announces Two New Quantum Systems, Suggesting Quantum Advantage Is Near

IonQ has had a busy few weeks, as the company is focused on developing systems based on trapped ions. The company today announced two new systems, Tempo and Forte Enterprise. These are rack-mountable systems that can be deployed in a data center. Speaking yesterday at Tabor Communications’ (HPCwire’s parent organization) HPC & AI on Wall Street Conference, the company emphasized that the new systems would allow them to achieve quantum advantage within 2-3 years.

You probably know if you follow quantum computing that the deployment of quantum computers in datacenters is rare. The vast majority of NISQ-era computers were accessed via web portals. IonQ’s latest announcement, QuEra’s announcement in August of a similar product, and IBM’s increased efforts to place quantum systems on premises (Cleveland Clinic, PINQ2) suggest that a change is about to occur.

IonQ offers two rack-mounted products for companies and governments who want to integrate quantum technology into their existing infrastructure. The company reported that businesses will be able harness the power and flexibility of quantum technology directly from their data centers. This makes the technology more accessible and easier to integrate into key business workflows. IonQ calls the new systems \”enterprise-grade\”. (see the official announcement)
